In a press release on March 22, 2006, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) urged the government of Afghanistan to release an Afghan man being held on charges of converting to Christianity.
"Islam advocates both freedom of religion and freedom of conscience." CAIR, March 22, 2006.
In the statement, CAIR indicated their belief that the State should not punish apostates with death, even though Islamic scholars, such as Dr. Niaz Faizi Kabuli of Afghanistan, state that Islamic law calls for the death penalty for Muslims who leave Islam.
