Kathryn, I wish more people would read what you wrote. Ten years ago I too had a run-in with psychotherapy’s cousin, neurology. The doctor was proposing, based on my symptoms (some of which included tremors of various muscles, full-body spasms at attempts to fall asleep, and so on, that ran along with psychological symptoms like depression and panic attacks), that I may have this or that disease and was giving me medications supposed to neutralize the symptoms. And as in your case, the medications were making things worse. I visited three doctors with the same outcome. That was when it hit me: THEY JUST DON’T KNOW. As much as the medical science has observed so far, there is so much more about human body, minds, nerves, bacteria in us and so on, that they just don’t know. And they didn’t know in my case what I was having and why I was having it, or how to make it go away.
That realization turned me to alternative treatments (acupuncture and herbs and changes in beyonce diet) and in the coming months I healed. And I can be skeptical and ignore the correlation between my treatments and my healing, but the point remains: Our medicine has limited knowledge of human body and mind but it rarely has the awareness and the honesty to admit it. In your case the doctor came with authority: you have a PTSD, that’s a fact, and you should take Zoloft and Klonopin, it’s fact that they help with PTSD. And the fact is, none of that is a fact. Had your doctor been less definitive in his diagnosis, you would have suffered less. Same is true with me, and I suspect many other people.
I’m not saying we should abandon all medicine for alternative treatments, and I do not say modern medicine isn’t useful and effective in many cases; I just wish medical professionals had more sense and sincerity to recognize their field’s limits and be less dismissive about other methods, with better track record — in the minds of populations and cultures at least, if not medical journals — for treating certain ailments.
Just to top it off, my final visit to an endocrinologist that was scheduled after my alternative treatment started, resulted in him saying that 1) it’s unlikely that I’m experiencing symptoms I reported, and 2) he recommends I should stop taking herbal supplements because we don’t know how they work.
